DANCE TOWN
A film by Kyu-hwan Jeon
Texas Premiere
This impressive drama – the final entry in Director Jeon’s trilogy on urban isolation – takes a look at the commonality of loneliness and alienation in everyday life. Middle-aged North Korean Rhee (Ra Mi-ran) defects at the expense of her husband’s freedom. She is provided an apartment by her South Korean handlers, yet is under as much (if not more) surveillance and scrutiny in her new life. Slowly making contacts in the community, going on dates, and finding employment, there is an overwhelming sense of disconnect in her life. Waiting for her husband to escape, Rhee’s encounters are intertwined with the lives of her debt-ridden handler, a suicidal teen, a hapless police officer and a lonely handicapped man for whom Rhee makes kimchi. It would be easy to claim many of the characters “social misfits,” if their struggles weren’t so similar to our own. The film is highlighted by its powerful performances and touching drama.
